China Automobile Dealers Association: China's imported automobile market monthly report in August 2020

Market supply

From January to August 2020, the impact of the global epidemic has eased, and the country has imported a total of 515,000 vehicles (including chassis), a year-on-year cumulative decrease of 26.6%, and the total value of imported vehicles is RMB 172.42 billion. In August, 85,000 vehicles (including chassis) were imported in a single month, a year-on-year decrease of 5.6%, and the total value of imported vehicles was RMB 29.6 billion.

Sales

From January to August, the terminal sales of imported passenger cars reached 600,000 units, a cumulative year-on-year decline of 18.3%; in August, the terminal sales of imported passenger cars reached 83,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 0.7%. The main reason for the increase was the low base of the same period last year.

Parallel imported cars

From January to July, 57,000 parallel imported cars accounted for 13.3% of the total imports, a decrease of 1.7 percentage points compared with the market share in 2019, and a cumulative decrease of 43% year-on-year. In July, there were only 33 parallel imported cars (recorded), a sharp drop of 99.7% month-on-month.

Model structure

From January to August, the sales of imported passenger cars were still dominated by sedans and SUVs, accounting for 95.7%; the declines of sedans, SUVs and MPVs were 17.1%, 19.7% and 12.3% respectively, and the declines were reduced. In August, the decline of SUVs was reduced to 5.8%, while sedans and MPVs increased by 8.0% and 16.8% respectively.

Level Structure

From January to August 2020, the market share of large and medium-large imported cars continued to increase compared with 2019, up 2.3 and 7.0 percentage points respectively; the market share of other segments decreased, among which the market share of medium and compact imported cars decreased by 5.7 and 2.5 percentage points respectively. The data shows that the impact of the epidemic on the mid-to-high-end market is relatively small.

Displacement structure

From January to August 2020, 1.5~2.0L remained in the first displacement range, with a share of 44.6%, but a decrease of 1.5 percentage points; due to Tesla's domestic production, the share of displacement below 1.0L decreased by nearly 3.7 percentage points; the share of the 2.0~3.0L displacement range expanded, with an overall share of 37.1%, an increase of 6.1 percentage points over the whole year of 2019.
