Ali Health Research Institute releases "Double 11 Family Health Reserve Insight Report" to outline new trends in family health consumption

During this year’s Tmall Double 11, health products and services were more popular than in previous years. On November 9, the Ali Health Research Institute and Tmall Medical Health jointly released the “Double 11 Family Health Reserve Insight Report”, outlining the new trend of family health consumption.

More chronic disease patients are turning over health "hard currency"

Unlike ordinary consumers who took the opportunity to stock up on clothing, digital products or daily necessities, Tmall Double 11 also welcomed a group of special consumers - patients with chronic diseases.

Data from the Ali Health Research Institute shows that compared with last year's Tmall Double 11, the number of people who bought stoma bags this year increased by nearly 40% year-on-year, and the transaction amount of home ventilators increased by nearly 60% year-on-year. On the first day of Double 11 (November 1), the sales amount of painless blood glucose meters increased by nearly 300% year-on-year.

Behind these family health “hard currencies” is more convenient chronic disease services.

For example, patients with colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, etc., if they cannot keep their anus or bladder, need to carry an "ostomy bag" with them to store excrement. This special product is not only frequently replaced, but also generally needs to be used for a long time. The Double 11 with large discounts undoubtedly provides an opportunity to "stock up".

More chronic disease patients reported that they chose Tmall for online shopping because they were eager to meet more people of the same kind. They met in the self-built communities of Tmall merchants and comforted each other.

Chen Hao, general manager of Tmall Medical and Health, said that during the Double 11 period, in addition to ostomy bags, the growth of home medical devices such as home nebulizers for auxiliary treatment of respiratory diseases, insulin injection pens, blood glucose meters and test strips, and home test strips for early cancer screening were all very obvious.

This trend reflects that more and more patients with chronic diseases and people who care about their own health are willing to try to purchase medicines and consult nursing knowledge on e-commerce platforms. Tmall and merchants are also exploring special nursing and popular science guidance to help more families in need.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Becomes a “New National Trend”

Influenced by multiple factors including favorable policies, traditional Chinese medicine has become a highlight of this year's Tmall Double 11.

Data from the Alibaba Health Research Institute shows that compared with last year's Tmall Double 11, the number of people placing orders for traditional Chinese medicine this year has increased nearly four times year-on-year, among which people born in the 1980s and 1990s account for nearly 60%. Traditional Chinese medicine is sought after by young people.

In addition, compared with last year's Tmall Double 11, the transaction volume of classic tonic prescriptions this year increased nearly 3 times year-on-year. 14 well-known Chinese medicine halls such as Fang Huichuntang, Gushengtang, and Xiaolu Chinese Medicine participated in Tmall Double 11 for the first time, bringing thousands of Chinese medicine pieces and hundreds of famous Chinese medicine prescriptions to consumers.

The Internet has, to a certain extent, solved the needs of grassroots users for high-quality TCM resources. The majority of users who order TCM come from sixth-tier cities.

Young and old people "walk towards each other"

Data shows that compared with last year's Tmall Double 11, this year's young people bought health products for their parents 30% more. As the COVID-19 pandemic recurs, more young people choose to fulfill their filial piety for their parents remotely during Tmall Double 11. Health products have become the best "family connector."

In young people's list of "stockpiling" for their parents' health, physical examinations, hearing aids and crutches rank at the top three.

A phenomenon worth noting is that more elderly people have chosen to shop online themselves to "reduce the burden" on their children. Compared with Tmall's Double 11 two years ago, the number of elderly consumers of Tmall's medical and health products has more than doubled this year, becoming a "new" online shopping group.

Among the home medical devices purchased by the elderly for themselves, the top three are forehead thermometers, blood glucose meters and blood pressure monitors.

This year's Tmall Double 11 witnessed young people and old people "moving towards each other". (End)
