The evolution of China’s automotive ecosystem: Trends in smart mobility
The latest survey results of Roland Berger's tenth issue of "Disruptive Data Detection in the Automotive Industry" show that in 2021, China will continue to lead the world's most innovative and disruptive automotive market. Focusing on the Chinese market, new energy vehicles continue to accelerate penetration beyond expectations, driving the leapfrog development of the multi-dimensional energy replenishment network; local travel service providers and ecological partners cross-border integration, and continue to explore the implementation of scenario-based ecological cooperation; in addition, under effective epidemic prevention and control, residents' long-distance travel, the three-in-one three-dimensional transportation system of cities, and the intelligent construction of transportation systems have made great progress. Based on this, Roland Berger's Automotive Industry Center sorted out the five major trends in the field of smart travel and shared the latest progress in the evolution of China's automotive ecosystem.
In 2021, China's electric vehicle market has once again made significant breakthroughs, and the penetration rate of new energy passenger vehicles is expected to exceed 15% throughout the year. The negative impact of the epidemic is gradually easing, and the policy support and coverage areas for the construction and operation of energy replenishment infrastructure are constantly expanding. In 2021, there will be more than 1 million public charging piles nationwide, and the proportion of high-power DC fast charging piles will exceed 40%, continuing to lead global development and further effectively improving the guarantee capacity of energy replenishment infrastructure services. Looking to the future, the proportion of products that can support battery swap models, integrated energy management service solutions for photovoltaic storage and charging, orderly charging, new technology applications for vehicle-grid interaction (V2G, distributed energy storage), and intelligent integrated platforms based on "Internet +" are all relatively clear development trends, and a multi-in-one energy replenishment system of "car-pile-station-person-cloud" will gradually take shape.
China is one of the most innovative and disruptive major automotive markets in the world. Chinese consumers' interest in, expectations for development, and confidence in safe operations for autonomous driving and mobile travel far exceed those of European and American consumers. In comparison, Chinese consumers have the most positive perception of this and are more proactive in participating in various test experiences and trying new things. Throughout 2021, leading mobile travel service providers have been polishing application scenarios and promoting the maturity of "scenario-based ecological cooperation": leveraging the power of ecological partners (such as OEMs, logistics and distribution companies, catering and new retail companies, etc.), they will be the first to implement commercialization within the scene and jointly explore sustainable business/profit models. Ecological partners will use their deep accumulation in the mobile Internet and business model practices to empower automotive ecological services. At the same time, epidemic control has promoted the operation and implementation speed of some closed scenarios in the Chinese market, such as unmanned delivery, mobile meals and mobile retail.
Benefiting from effective epidemic prevention and control, China has become one of the first regions to resume normal social operations. Compared with Europe and the United States, which are severely affected by the epidemic, the long-distance travel needs of Chinese residents are the least affected, but the longest acceptable travel distance (including domestic and outbound) is still nearly 20% shorter than before the epidemic. After the epidemic, Chinese residents' preference for traveling by passenger car has increased, while their preference for airplanes has decreased, but the overall preference difference has not changed much compared with residents in Europe and the United States. National and local prevention and control policies, travel control of affiliated units, the rise of online communication methods, environmental considerations, budget constraints, etc. have become the main factors affecting official and private travel.
Driven by the development of new energy, vertical take-off and landing, and unmanned driving technologies, the development breakthrough of China's urban three-dimensional transportation system will focus on the application scenarios of "carrying goods" and "carrying people", empowering industries such as logistics and transportation, medical rescue, and modern agriculture, and helping traditional industries to transform and upgrade to high-end and intelligent. Improved regulatory policies, technological innovation, and business model innovation will be the three core factors that promote the concept pilot to large-scale implementation of my country's urban three-dimensional transportation. At present, my country's urban three-dimensional transportation is still in its infancy. Thanks to the development of China's express logistics and takeaway industries, it is committed to solving the "carrying goods" scenario that meets the needs of urban terminal distribution of Chinese residents and taking the lead in breakthroughs, providing enterprises with a more efficient and reliable logistics operation model. As for the "carrying people" application scenario, its convenient and efficient advantages will help alleviate the traffic congestion problem in large cities during China's urbanization process. In the future, urban air traffic will help build a new integrated transportation system of "air-ground-underground", complementing and linking ground road traffic and underground rail traffic.
As the first year of the "14th Five-Year Plan", 2021 has seen many regions respond to the call of the government and policies, intensively release smart city strategies, continue to promote the development of smart transportation systems, cloud platforms and computing, continuously improve smart city evaluation indicators, continuously improve smart city service levels and enhance vehicle-road collaboration capabilities. At present, the construction of China's smart city transportation system mainly focuses on first-tier and second-tier cities, and will gradually extend to small and medium-sized cities in the future to enhance urban innovation and competitiveness. Driven by the construction of smart city transportation systems, Chinese residents will minimize "commuting time", and the government's fine regulation and precise control of urban transportation will be further enhanced, enabling the four major components of people, vehicles, roads and the environment to operate in a coordinated manner.
