Korean media: Chinese manufacturers plagiarize and dilute the influence of Korean products

According to Korean media reports, at this year's CES, Samsung and LG displayed new home appliances, but the influence of these products was diluted due to plagiarism by Chinese companies. The so-called "plagiarism problem" has existed for a long time. In the past few years, in order to compete for attention at large international exhibitions, Chinese technology companies have launched products that look very similar to Samsung and LG products, but at a cheaper price. This year's CES exhibition is no exception. On the one hand, Chinese technology companies hope to attract visitors through aggressive prices, and on the other hand, they offer products that look similar to global technology leaders.

Amid growing concerns about copying in China, South Korean consumer electronics giants are taking a more passive approach when announcing major product development blueprints.

Samsung co-CEO Yoon Boo-keun, who oversees the company's home appliance division, declined to provide detailed product development plans during a meeting with South Korean media, saying only that the company is looking for ways to differentiate its products from those of other companies.

CES 2016 attracted more than 150,000 visitors, with products covering the Internet of Things, virtual reality and connected devices. Like past exhibitions, the four-day CES was also inseparable from television.

On the first day of the show, many exhibitors gathered to see large-screen TVs with advanced technology. Samsung Electronics and LG, the leaders in the TV market, have embedded IoT features in large-screen TVs to differentiate themselves.

Although the booths of Chinese TV manufacturers such as Hisense, Haier and TCL were smaller than those of Samsung and LG, they also displayed their latest TVs using their own technologies. It is particularly noteworthy that the prices of Hisense's products are very aggressive.

"We showed a TV using our own ULED technology," said a Hisense manager. ULED TVs can provide high dynamic range (HDR) images with a brightness of 1,000 lumens, and use quantum dot display technology. Hisense's products are also much cheaper than OLED. At the booth, Hisense compared the image clarity of OLED and ULED, and the difference between the two was almost the same to the human eye.

TCL, another Chinese TV giant, is also actively promoting quantum dot QUHD TVs. A TCL manager said the company's flagship X1 series TVs support key technologies such as HDR and 4K resolution. Haier, the world's largest white goods company, has also launched a 55-inch UHD TV that is only 7.9 mm thick.

"Chinese companies have made significant technological progress, but they are still far from the market leaders in terms of image clarity and display thickness," said an LG executive while visiting a Chinese TV vendor's booth.

Samsung and LG, as market leaders, also displayed eye-catching TVs. Samsung displayed a 170-inch quantum dot SUHD TV, the world's largest TV. LG Electronics promoted its HDR products. "We will not lower the price of OLED TVs this year," said Kwon Bong-seok, head of LG's TV business, at the launch event.
