Japan plans to realize fully automatic driving of transportation buses at the Tokyo Olympics

Recently, there have been reports that Japan will test the performance and safety of fully autonomous vehicles on busy major roads such as the Metropolitan Expressway starting in 2017.

Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Hirokazu Matsuno said at a press conference on the 15th that the Japanese government plans to achieve fully automatic driving of transportation buses and some rental cars at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Minister Matsuno said that with the arrival of an aging society in Japan, the demand for fully autonomous vehicles will increase significantly, and the market size is immeasurable. He said that from September 2017 to March 2019, the Japanese government will work with automakers to conduct trials on major highways in the Japanese archipelago, such as the Metropolitan Expressway, the Tomei Expressway from Tokyo to Nagoya, and the Joban Expressway, which have very congested traffic and complex road conditions, to collect more data, improve the performance of fully autonomous vehicles, and enhance safety.
