Ride-hailing giant Lyft announces it will join the ranks of autonomous driving research and development
The company expects to hire hundreds of employees for the new department by the end of the year, and has just signed a 50,000-square-foot lease on the first floor of the Palo Alto factory, where it plans to set up multiple labs and open testing spaces. Lyft will develop a new "open driverless platform" here. Lyft hopes to get various automakers to join its driverless platform with its hardware combination and software system that is still under development. The plan is similar to the one previously announced by Uber. As Lyft's biggest rival, Uber uses Volvo's XC90 to test self-driving car technology on the road. Uber announced earlier this year that it would work with Daimler to operate driverless cars on its network. Lyft Chief Strategy Officer Raj Kapoor said he would not comment on the comparison between the two, but he said Lyft has a way to attract top talent, a reliable list of partners and the key data needed to build a system.
