Tesla's internal data leaked, more than 80% of vehicles need to be reworked

On the evening of August 21st, Eastern Time, foreign media reported that Tesla's internal data showed that it achieved its key production target in the last week of June, but more than 4,300 of the 5,000 Model 3 cars produced in a single week needed to be reworked.

This means that Tesla's first-time pass rate for Model 3 that week was about 14%, meaning that only 14% of the vehicles did not need to be reworked.

Internal documents show that Tesla modified more than 4,300 Model 3s during the week of June 23. It took an average of 37 minutes to repair each vehicle.

Factories with a first-time pass rate of more than 80% can be considered competitive, and the first-time pass rate of general manufacturers is between 65% and 80%. Tesla's pass rate in the last week was far lower than this rate.

A Tesla spokesperson explained that while its first-pass pass rate is confidential, it's important to understand that rework can also include minor issues and that most cars have no major problems when they reach the end of the production line.

"Our goal is to produce a perfect car for every customer," the spokesman said. "To ensure the highest quality, we make even the smallest improvements to every car before it leaves the factory.

Specialized inspection teams track every car in every shop on the assembly line, and each car then goes through an additional quality control process at the end of the line. All of this happens before the car leaves the factory and is delivered to the customer.

The spokesperson also said that Model 3 production hours have decreased by nearly 30% since the previous quarter.
