The northern section of Yanchong Expressway is 110 kilometers long, starting from the border between Beijing and Hebei and ending at Haomenling New Village in Chicheng Town in the west. It is reported that the plain sections of Xingyan Expressway and Yanchong Expressway will be opened to traffic on January 1, 2019. Just before New Year's Day, several "mysterious" convoys have already hit the road: On December 29, the Capital Highway Development Group took the lead in conducting a demonstration activity on the Yanchong Expressway, in which the vehicle-road cooperative equipment for autonomous driving jointly developed by Baidu and TransInfo Technology has been deployed in the northern section.

As one of the northwest expressways for the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, Yanchong Expressway connects Beijing city, Yanqing New Town and Zhangbei area of ​​Hebei Province. In the future, it will form the third expressway in northwest Beijing with Xingyan Expressway. Baidu Apollo and Qianfang have successfully deployed vehicle-road collaboration equipment on Yanchong Expressway, which can be said to be equipped with double safety and efficiency guarantees for this important channel that carries the integrated road network of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. It will provide 360-degree all-round safety protection for vehicles, conduct traffic diversion and allocate highway resources.

At the "Yanchong Expressway Vehicle-Road Collaboration and Autonomous Driving Demonstration Work Meeting" organized by Beijing Capital Highway Development Group Co., Ltd. today, Dr. Tao Ji of Baidu's Intelligent Driving Business Group proposed a three-stage technical solution plan for realizing intelligent highways on Yanchong Expressway. The first stage is to complete the intercommunication of vehicle-road network cloud, and complete the data interface within the vehicle-road collaboration framework with partners; the second stage is to realize roadside intelligent networking, establish a vehicle-road collaborative perception technology framework, focus on the research of autonomous driving technology based on roadside perception, and deploy multi-sensor combination vehicle-road collaborative perception capabilities on roadside computing units and edge computing (MEC) infrastructure; the third stage is to complete 5G collaborative intelligent highways, further develop vehicle-road collaborative decision-making and control algorithms, and improve the environmental adaptability of autonomous driving vehicles. Based on the rich roadside and vehicle-side data brought by the highly intelligent roadside infrastructure, as well as the powerful 5G network and edge computing capabilities, application optimization and resource orchestration suitable for the needs of vehicle-road collaborative autonomous driving are realized. As a pioneer in the field of autonomous driving vehicle-road collaboration, Baidu Apollo will adhere to the technical principles of safety and efficiency to provide technical innovation support, application landing support, and security data support for highway operators and highway regulators.

In fact, as early as 2015, Baidu had already conducted high-speed tests and achieved the first fully automatic driving in mixed road conditions of cities, ring roads and highways. At that time, Baidu's driverless car started from the Baidu Building near Zhongguancun Software Park, drove into the G7 Beijing-Xinjiang Expressway, arrived at the Olympic Forest Park via the Fifth Ring Road, and returned along the original route, which can be called "the most beautiful AI scenery". The successful road test of Baidu's driverless car in 2015 created three "mosts" in the field of China's driverless car research and development: "the most complex road conditions", "the most comprehensive automatic driving actions", and "the highest environmental understanding accuracy".

On December 28, Baidu Apollo's full-scenario driverless fleet debuted in Changsha, Hunan, and "started running" in the Xiangjiang New District Expressway Test Area. Unlike three years ago, this time Baidu Apollo's driverless fleet "grouped" on the road, transforming into a cluster of driverless cars speeding on the highway, setting a new record in the global autonomous driving field - the most types of vehicles appeared on the highway, and at the same time, it also completed the country's first multi-model high-speed scene autonomous driving vehicle-road collaboration demonstration. Baidu Apollo once again became the "founder" of China's autonomous driving, unlocking the scene of driverless car teams on the highway for other driverless competitors.
