China's new energy vehicle sales fell 56.4% in Q1 2020, but Tesla's sales in March exceeded 10,000 vehicles

Affected by factors such as the epidemic and the decline in subsidies, China's new energy vehicle market continued to be sluggish in early 2020. According to the latest data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first quarter of 2020, China's new energy vehicle production was 105,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 60.2%, and sales were 114,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 56.4%.

However, it is worth noting that amid the overall downturn, Tesla Motors bucked the trend, with sales exceeding 10,000 units in March alone, eight times the sales of NIO in March.

The main reason is that Tesla started building a super factory in Shanghai, China as early as a year ago. With the gradual control of the epidemic in China, the Shanghai Super Factory gradually resumed work after completion. In addition, Tesla cars do have sufficient strength in terms of battery life and appearance, which enables it to maintain a relatively high growth rate even when the overall market is sluggish.

However, from the perspective of the entire industry, although the current subsidy reduction will have an adverse impact on some brands, as the new energy market gradually returns to pure product and pure commercial competition, it is believed that in the future, new energy vehicles will still be able to quickly enter a high-growth channel.
