Xpeng Motors Wuhan factory project officially launched, accelerating the separation process with Hainan Mazda

New car manufacturers often face a choice when entering the market: should they produce and research their own products or hire someone else to do the manufacturing? Previously, Xiaopeng Motors chose the latter. In 2017, Xiaopeng Motors announced that it had reached a four-year OEM cooperation agreement with Hainan Mazda. With Haima's OEM, Xiaopeng Motors was able to quickly implement technology while also focusing its resources on R&D and technology.

But as early as the beginning of the signing of the agreement, some analysts pointed out that OEM was only a transitional model, and subsequent large-scale mass production would definitely be completed in self-built factories. Judging from Xiaopeng's actions in recent years, they have indeed done so.

In the same year that Xiaopeng and Haima reached an agreement, the foundation of Xiaopeng Motors' Zhaoqing factory was also laid, and it went into production at the end of 2019. In 2020, after the Zhaoqing factory obtained the qualification for vehicle production, Xiaopeng transferred the production of P7 to that factory. Recently, Xiaopeng Motors announced that its Wuhan project will be officially launched in Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, with a planned production capacity of 100,000 vehicles.

For Xiaopeng Motors, this is a step forward for the future, but for Haima, it is a bolt from the blue. Data shows that 68% of Haima Motors' sales come from OEM for Xiaopeng. If Xiaopeng's sales are excluded, Haima Motors' monthly sales are even less than 900. Now, the production contract between Haima and Xiaopeng will expire at the end of the year, and Xiaopeng has also stated that it will not renew the contract. This year-end may not be easy for Haima.
