According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security, the number of motor vehicles in China will reach 417 million in 2022, including 319 million cars; the number of motor vehicle drivers will reach 502 million, including 464 million car drivers. In 2022, 34.78 million new motor vehicles will be registered nationwide, and 29.23 million new drivers will be licensed.

The number of cars reached 319 million, accounting for 76.59% of the total number of motor vehicles, an increase of 17.52 million vehicles compared with 2021, a growth of 5.81%. 23.23 million new cars were registered nationwide. The number of motorcycles reached 80.72 million, accounting for 19.38% of the total number of motor vehicles, an increase of 5.13 million vehicles compared with 2021, a growth of 6.79%. 11.3 million new motorcycles were registered nationwide.

84 cities in China have more than 1 million cars. There are 84 cities in China with more than 1 million cars, an increase of 5 cities year-on-year, 39 cities with more than 2 million cars, and 21 cities with more than 3 million cars. Among them, Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Shanghai have more than 5 million cars, Suzhou, Zhengzhou, Xi'an, and Wuhan have more than 4 million cars, and 13 cities including Shenzhen, Dongguan, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Foshan, Ningbo, Shijiazhuang, Linyi, Changsha, Jinan, and Nanjing have more than 3 million cars.

The number of new energy vehicles in China reached 13.1 million, with 5.35 million newly registered throughout the year. By the end of 2022, the number of new energy vehicles in China reached 13.1 million, accounting for 4.10% of the total number of vehicles. Excluding the number of scrapped and deregistered vehicles, it increased by 5.26 million vehicles compared with 2021, an increase of 67.13%. Among them, the number of pure electric vehicles was 10.45 million, accounting for 79.78% of the total number of new energy vehicles. In 2022, 5.35 million new energy vehicles were newly registered nationwide, accounting for 23.05% of the total number of newly registered vehicles, an increase of 2.4 million vehicles compared with the previous year, an increase of 81.48%. The number of newly registered new energy vehicles increased rapidly from 1.07 million in 2018 to 5.35 million in 2022.

The number of car transfer registrations continues to grow, and the used car trading market is active. By the end of 2022, the national public security traffic management departments had handled a total of 30.27 million motor vehicle transfer registrations. Among them, 28.69 million car transfer registrations accounted for 94.80%. In the past five years, the ratio of used car transfer registrations to new car registrations has increased from 0.77 to 1.24, exceeding the number of new car registrations. In 2022, the Ministry of Public Security, together with the Ministry of Commerce and other departments, launched a series of new measures to facilitate the reform of used car transaction registrations, and fully implemented the "separate endorsement and issuance of temporary license plates" for used car dealers. 3.1 million used passenger cars were directly registered for transactions in other places, which better promoted the circulation of used cars.

The number of motor vehicle drivers reached 502 million, and 440,000 people obtained C6 licenses. By the end of 2022, the number of motor vehicle drivers in China reached 502 million, of which 464 million were car drivers, accounting for 92.54% of the total number of drivers. In 2022, 29.23 million new drivers were licensed nationwide. The "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driver's Licenses" (Ministry of Public Security Order No. 162), which came into effect on April 1, 2022, added the "light tractor trailer" license (C6). Currently, the number of drivers who have obtained C6 licenses has reached 440,000, which better meets the needs of the public to drive small caravan trailers and promote the development of new forms of RV tourism.

96.16 million vehicle and driver's license transactions were handled online.
