Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: Operation status of the national lithium-ion battery industry in 2022

In 2022, my country's lithium-ion battery industry will adhere to supply-side structural reform, accelerate technological innovation and transformation and upgrading, continuously improve the supply capacity of advanced products, and maintain a rapid growth trend overall.

First, the output continues to grow rapidly, and the scale of the industry continues to expand. According to information from industry norms and announcements from companies and research institutions, the national output of lithium-ion batteries will reach 750GWh in 2022, a year-on-year increase of more than 130%, of which the output of energy storage lithium batteries will exceed 100GWh; the output of first-order lithium battery materials such as positive electrode materials, negative electrode materials, diaphragms, and electrolytes will be approximately 1.85 million tons, 1.4 million tons, 13 billion square meters, and 850,000 tons, respectively, with year-on-year growth of more than 60%; the scale of the industry will further expand, and the total output value of the industry will exceed 1.2 trillion yuan.

Second, the industry application is accelerating and expanding, which will help accelerate the dual carbon process. In 2022, lithium batteries will accelerate their rise in the field of new energy vehicles and energy storage fields such as wind and solar energy storage, communication energy storage, and household energy storage, and usher in a growth window. In 2022, the national new energy vehicle power battery installed capacity will be about 295GWh, and the cumulative installed capacity of energy storage lithium batteries will increase by more than 130%. In 2022, the total export volume of lithium batteries in China will be 342.65 billion yuan, an increase of 86.7% year-on-year, making positive contributions to the efficient development and utilization of new energy and the green and low-carbon transformation of the global economy and society.

Third, the pace of technological progress has accelerated, and advanced products have emerged in an endless stream. Key enterprises have accelerated their layout in the direction of efficient system integration and ultra-large capacity batteries, and the energy density of advanced battery products has exceeded 250Wh/kg; new battery products that are flexible, low-temperature resistant, and waterproof have been successfully applied to Winter Olympic equipment; new generation information technology and new energy storage products have been further integrated, and intelligent liquid cooling technology has significantly enhanced the thermal management level of energy storage systems and reduced system safety risks.

Fourth, the industry's investment enthusiasm is high, and the whole chain strengthens collaborative cooperation. According to incomplete statistics, in 2022, there are more than 40 projects planned in the battery cell link alone, with a planned total production capacity of more than 1.2TWh and a planned investment of 430 billion yuan. The prices of upstream products fluctuated at high levels, and the prices of lithium battery secondary materials repeatedly rose and fell. The average prices of battery-grade lithium carbonate and battery-grade lithium hydroxide (micro powder grade) in 2022 reached 481,000 yuan/ton and 464,000 yuan/ton respectively. Lithium battery companies strengthen upstream and downstream cooperation in the industrial chain through various forms such as investment and equity participation, signing long-term orders, and joint research.
