The iPhone is getting bigger and the iPad is dying
IDC released a report saying that it expects global tablet shipments (including 2-in-1 devices) to reach 245.4 million units in 2014, a decrease of 6% from the previous forecast of 260.9 million units, and the annual growth rate is only 12.1%, far lower than last year's 51.8%. Tom Mainelli, vice president of IDC's device and display department, explained: "There are two main reasons for the slowdown in the tablet market. First, consumers' replacement cycle is longer than expected, especially for high-priced products from big brands, which will not be easily eliminated. When they do buy a new phone, they usually give the existing one to other people in the family instead of selling it directly. Second, the rise of 5.5+ inch tablets has caused many people to hesitate when facing tablets: Why buy a tablet when a large-screen mobile phone can already do the job well?" Nowadays, the iPhone also has a large screen, one 4.7 inches and the other 5.5 inches, the latter just crossing the threshold of tablets, and tablets are bound to be hit more seriously, including its own iPad. The share of 5.5-7-inch models in smartphones is rising sharply. It was 4.3% in the first quarter of last year, and it has reached 10.5% a year later, which means 30.1 million units have been shipped. IDC believes that tablets must turn to larger screens to revive, such as Microsoft's 12-inch Surface Pro 3. IDC therefore predicts that tablets will start to become larger again after a wave of miniaturization. Last year, 7-8-inch tablets accounted for 55.0%, 8-11-inch tablets accounted for 44.1%, and 11-inch and above tablets accounted for only 0.9%. By next year, small tablets will only account for 44.5%, medium-sized tablets will rise to 48.9% and large tablets will also increase to 6.6%. In terms of operating systems, Android will stabilize at more than 60% in the future, Windows/Windows RT is expected to gradually get 10%, and iOS iPad will shrink.
