Computex 2014: If you don’t go crazy, you’ll be old
The 2014 Taipei Computer Show is here as scheduled. As the world's second largest computer show, we are used to describing it as a feast of technology. However, the Taipei Computer Show in recent years has made people feel a little boring. Perhaps Computex itself has not changed much, but people's "taste" for computers has long changed in the era of mobile Internet. Compared with people's demand for computers ten years ago, it is already out of date. The PC computer industry needs precipitation and innovation to stimulate a new round of potential explosion, and the 2014 Taipei Computer Show seems to be catering to this trend - accumulating energy in the unchanged and seeking breakthroughs in the change. Unchanged upgrade mode Every year, the Taipei Computer Show is the protagonist of Taiwanese manufacturers, who try their best to play the role of host on such an international stage, and this year is no exception. ASUS took the lead in releasing a series of products, including seven heavyweight new products across the board, covering multiple product categories such as notebooks, tablets, monitors, and routers. Although it is exciting, it is a little regrettable because from the perspective of product innovation, these products did not make us shine. Most of the products are just continuing the previous mode of becoming lighter and thinner, or using a new generation of processors to bring performance or power consumption advantages. The most eye-catching Transformer Book V is just an integrated addition in terms of functions. As for the Fonepad8 and MeMO Pad 7 tablets, they are just hardware upgrades without any breakthrough changes. Of course, if we talk about innovation, ASUS is an active player, at least it has brought out a large number of decent new products to express its sincerity. However, more manufacturers just continue to apply the previous upgrade model, the product mold remains unchanged or slightly modified, and the new generation of processors or graphics cards have become the only gimmick. Maybe this upgrade model could pass the test a few years ago, but today, when user experience is valued rather than hardware performance, these upgrades can only add a few sets of boring parameters and it is difficult to attract more attention. Although Ultrabooks are praised as the best innovation in the PC industry in recent years, they still cannot escape the drawbacks brought by the PC industry upgrade model. More and more product forms have appeared, but they cannot create a product form with the best experience. More manufacturers focus on hardware upgrades, and rarely make a fuss about the real user experience. A large number of transformable Ultrabooks also emerged at this Taipei Computer Show, but if compared with last year's or even the year before Computex, we still can't see too many changes. This new PC category with high hopes still can't break the inherent boundary between tablets and PCs. Users have become smarter and smarter when choosing products. Gorgeous upgrades do not mean real ease of use. This truth has long been confirmed on mobile phones and tablets. In the future, people will gradually dilute the weight of hardware when choosing computers, and pay more attention to the user experience. The upgrade idea of Ultrabooks may have to jump out of the scope of PCs before it can really develop. Changing industry vision As an industry practitioner, what I want to learn most from Computex is the latest technology and future industry development trends. As a leader in the PC industry, Intel obviously has such responsibilities and obligations. Unlike previous sessions, in addition to showcasing its next-generation 14nm processor, Intel emphasized personal computing convergence and the importance of wearable devices in the future at this Taipei Computer Show. In her keynote speech, Intel President James James said: The boundaries between different product categories are becoming increasingly blurred. Computing will be ubiquitous, with all devices connected to each other and the cloud. What is more important than the appearance is the extraordinary experience brought by the device. This statement is a reminder to the audience that Intel still maintains a strong technological advantage, and it also reveals Intel's ambitions in multiple industries such as mobile phones, tablets, and wearable devices in the current situation of the decline of the PC industry. Today, when wearable devices have not yet taken shape, it seems that the blue ocean of industrial development has been seen. Intel has launched the Edison technology solution for the wearable market, although it is currently envisioned as a general platform with built-in wireless technology to support the creation of wearable devices or small devices. But if the prototype of this solution can form a standard system and be successfully introduced to the market, the significance it brings may be more far-reaching than the formulation of the X86 architecture for PCs back then. Future innovation blueprint Perhaps it is precisely because we see that computing will be integrated into people's lives in the future that more and more manufacturers will get involved in this field. At this year's Taipei Computer Show, we will see more smart devices, wearable devices, mobile devices, touch devices, cloud technologies, etc. This will undoubtedly open up the thinking of PC manufacturers from another level and bring a new development model. However, there are still many unknowns in wearable devices. When will it really explode in the market, how to protect user privacy and universality, these problems may delay the stagnation of this market for 5 or even 10 years. Before looking forward to the arrival of a beautiful spring, manufacturers must also prepare for the winter. As a weathervane of the PC industry, the Taipei Computer Show foreshadows the development pattern of the industry and market in the second half of the year. However, with the PC industry gradually declining in the market trend, the Taipei Computer Show still cannot bring too much expectations. From the perspective of the development of the times, the Taipei Computer Show is more based on the vigorous development of Taiwan's computer companies in the first 20 years to gradually form an influence. In recent years, Taiwanese companies have performed poorly, and their product innovation capabilities have declined, making it difficult to create greater influence. Especially at a time when tablets, mobile phones, and mobile Internet are rampant, the relatively narrow name of Taipei Computer Show has somewhat made other mobile device exhibitors and participants lose interest. Even though this Taipei Computer Show did not bring us too many surprises, it still made us feel that the entire computer industry is seeking innovation and breakthroughs, and see many possibilities for future development, especially in the fields of personal computing, wearable devices, and cloud computing. It is very likely that in the next few computer shows, these products and technologies will become the protagonists and lead the PC industry into a new era.
