Ubuntu, which used to focus on desktop systems, launched the Ubuntu for Android project two years ago. The latter, like Motorola Atrix 4G, supports more functions of mobile phones through docking stations. In January last year, Ubuntu, which had been brewing for a long time, finally released the Ubuntu Touch mobile system and officially entered the hot mobile market. In August 2013, Ubuntu launched the Ubuntu Edge plan on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo - they planned to raise $32 million to build a top-level mobile phone - with the latest processor, 4G memory and 128G storage, which can run Ubuntu and Android systems at the same time. But unfortunately, the reality is cruel, and Ubuntu Edge ultimately failed to reach the fundraising target, and the project was interrupted. "Edge is actually more used for publicity." On the second day of the Asia Mobile Communications Expo, an Ubuntu employee told me while playing with the Meizu MX3 running the Ubuntu system. In fact, Ubuntu's internal hope for Edge's successful fundraising is not great - $32 million is not a small amount, even the originator of crowdfunding Kickstarter, its record is only $10 million. Although the project failed, the communication effect was good. From the birth of the project to the failure of fundraising, Ubuntu Edge occupied the pages of the technology media for nearly two months, and later discussions about it continued to be carried out from time to time in the geek circle. The discussion boom of the Ubuntu mobile phone system in China has only really arrived this year - Meizu CEO Bai Yongxiang announced at the beginning of the year that it would develop the MX3 running the Ubuntu system, and users have not stopped arguing about it until now. Later, with the personal visit of the vice president of the Ubuntu development company, Meizu brought Ubuntu MX3 to the MWC communication exhibition, and players' discussions on Ubuntu and Meizu were brought to a new peak. But the problem is that as a system that has been born for only more than a year, you can't expect Ubuntu to be as perfect as iOS and Android - its UI is very delicate, and the touch mode is full of potential, but the lack of popular applications and the lack of local content make it far from a mature system. So why did Meizu choose Ubuntu? "We are looking at the future." A Meizu employee told me. Ubuntu's understanding of products and markets is in line with Meizu, and they both recognize the importance of products. In fact, before cooperating with Ubuntu, Meizu also evaluated other systems. However, they either focus on the low-end field or have been confirmed by the market to be edge systems. Although they are more complete than Ubuntu, Meizu believes that there is little point in cooperating with them. I agree with this statement. From the experience alone, Ubuntu Touch running on Meizu MX3 yesterday felt good. The system responds to fingertips very quickly, and the UI details are also delicate enough: when the finger slides, the movie covers in the video list will pop up one by one like cards. In addition, as a comment after yesterday's article said, Ubuntu founder Shuttleworth is a stubborn person like Huang Zhang, and is extremely persistent in products and details. "In the pursuit of products and user experience, the two companies have the same understanding." Overseas resources are another factor in the cooperation between the two parties. Meizu started to build overseas channels three years ago, and Huang Zhang repeatedly emphasized that the company's ultimate goal is to "pursue the US market." The first batch of cooperation lists announced by Ubuntu in February this year include operators such as Portugal Telecom, Telecom Italia, Philippines Smart and Indonesia Smartfren. Its operator advisory group also includes large operators such as Vodafone, T-Mobile, and Verizon. They may all become Meizu's partners in the future. The construction of overseas markets, the adaptation of the Ubuntu system, the preparation of multiple mobile phones, the opening of Flyme to more devices, and the MX4 with fingerprint unlocking and a 5.5-inch display, which was exposed in advance by Huang Zhang... Meizu's schedule is not easy. Can they handle it? As a winner of Toutiao's Qingyun Plan and Baijiahao's Bai+ Plan, the 2019 Baidu Digital Author of the Year, the Baijiahao's Most Popular Author in the Technology Field, the 2019 Sogou Technology and Culture Author, and the 2021 Baijiahao Quarterly Influential Creator, he has won many awards, including the 2013 Sohu Best Industry Media Person, the 2015 China New Media Entrepreneurship Competition Beijing Third Place, the 2015 Guangmang Experience Award, the 2015 China New Media Entrepreneurship Competition Finals Third Place, and the 2018 Baidu Dynamic Annual Powerful Celebrity. |
