For just $10,000, your Audi can drive itself
If you want a self-driving car, but can't wait for Google's self-driving car, then Cruise may be able to fulfill your wish. Cruise's founder said that for only $10,000, they can equip your car with cameras, sensors, and computers to enable semi-autonomous driving. However, it can only be modified for Audi at present, and the function is not yet fully perfect. This set is called RP-1 equipment, which is currently only suitable for Audi A4 or S4 of 2012 or newer, and can only be sold in California, because California has relevant laws on self-driving cars. RP-1 includes a set of sensors that can further upgrade your Audi. It includes a braking system that controls steering, braking and acceleration, and a computer for comprehensive control. Basically, this set is similar to the equipment on Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans. Cruise has only made 50 sets of RP-1, and they will not be available until next year. In addition, RP-1 cannot be used everywhere, only on the highways in San Francisco Bay. So it may just be a new toy for some newly promoted small bosses. Like Google's expensive self-driving equipment ($75,000 to $100,000 per unit), the RP-1 relies on map data to drive, and without it, it can't move on the vast highway. In addition, it can't be used in rainy, foggy, or even at night. There are also legal issues. Cruise's founder previously founded several companies that were acquired by Autodesk and Google. But he has not yet said how to deal with legal matters if an accident occurs using the RP-1. However, Cruise admits that their system is still being improved, and they are doing the final improvement work and durability testing. Cruise plans to hand over the RP-1 to a third-party company for safety testing. The problem is that automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti already offer similar features on their cars, while other companies such as Cadillac and BMW are starting to develop their own systems. So who else will give Cruise $10,000 to modify their cars? Traditional automakers have large, mature OEMs, while Cruise is just a small company, and this is a matter of life and death. However, based on the popularity of Google Glass in the San Francisco Bay Area, perhaps there will still be many people willing to give Cruise a chance?
