Uncovering the secrets of North Korea's independently developed technology products: They are all "weird"

Recently, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Policy obtained the North Korean tablet computer "Samjiyon" ("Samjiyon", also translated as "Longxing"), which attracted attention from all parties. Tencent Technology today takes stock of the technological products independently developed by North Korea, allowing you to enter the technological culture of North Korea.

Tablet computer without WiFi function: The tablet computer "Longxing" obtained by the Korean Institute this time is a tablet computer that North Korea independently developed and released last year. It looks like an Apple iPad. The tablet computer is equipped with the Android system, but unfortunately it cannot access the international Internet and cannot open the WiFi link. It can only access the North Korean local area network. The Institute analyzed that North Korea may have developed this tablet computer for the purpose of educating primary and secondary school students. According to statistics, the tablet computer has 488 built-in applications, including the Korean version of "Angry Birds" and a series of books with research themes with North Korean characteristics.

Easy-to-use Arirang tablet: In October 2012, North Korea Central Television reported that the Pyongyang Intelligence and Technology Bureau had successfully developed a high-quality tablet computer called "Arirang". The report said that this tablet computer not only fully reflects the characteristics of North Korea, but is also easy to carry and operate, and can be easily used by men, women, and children, and is suitable for reading materials and e-books. From the TV screen, the desktop layout of the tablet computer is no different from the tablet computers equipped with Apple or Android operating systems on the market, but the application software icons are relatively rare.

Popular smartphone Pyongyang Touch: The Pyongyang Touch is a popular smartphone in North Korea. It is said that the Pyongyang Touch is available in three colors: pink, dark blue and white, and the colors are similar to Samsung Galaxy smartphones. According to a previous report by the Chosun Sinbo, most of the buyers of Pyongyang Touch are young people. The phone is favored by students and civil servants because of its pre-installed foreign language dictionaries, but it is unknown which languages are included. It's just that almost all North Koreans cannot access the Internet through this phone.

"Arirang" phone with quad-core processor: In August last year, North Korean official media exposed a smartphone that it claimed to be independently developed and produced, and the phone was named "Arirang". According to the exposed Arirang AS1201 model phone, the rear camera of this model is square, the flash is located on the side of the camera, the camera has 1.05 million pixels, and the Korean "Arirang" logo is printed on the back of the phone. Red Star operating system based on Linux: The Red Star operating system is a computer operating system independently developed and improved by North Korea based on the Linux operating system. In 2010, a Russian student studying in North Korea exposed the system on his blog. The system is divided into two versions: client and server. Third-party software needs to be purchased separately. There are three installation methods. The installation only takes 10-15 minutes, which is fast and convenient. However, the installation language is only "Korean". In addition, the system contains a browser called "My Motherland" developed by North Korea.

Red Star 3.0 operating system with an Apple-like interface: In February this year, the BBC website reported that North Korea launched a new computer operating system. This system, called "Red Star 3.0", has been installed on computers in most libraries and schools in North Korea. American computer experts have recorded and published screenshots of the window, and its interface is similar to Apple's Mac OS X. It is said that to run the latest "Red Star" system, the computer must be equipped with at least a "Pentium 3" 800MHz processor, 256MB of memory and 3GB of hard disk space.

"Self-developed" laptops: In May 2011, the US technology website PCWorld quoted North Korea's state television as saying that North Korea had independently developed three laptops, two for education and one for office use. The office laptops have two USB ports, a battery life of 2.5 hours, and can access the Internet. From the TV screen, these computers are not using the Windows system, but may be the Linux-based "Red Star" system developed by North Korea.
