Nvidia accuses Qualcomm and Samsung of infringing its graphics processing technology patents

Chipmaker Nvidia said on Thursday it has sued rival Qualcomm and electronics giant Samsung, alleging they infringed on its patents for graphics processing technology.

Nvidia, which competes with Qualcomm in the field of mobile chips for smartphones and tablets, said on Thursday that Qualcomm and Samsung used Nvidia's patented technology without authorization in mobile devices, including Samsung's just-released Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. Many of Samsung's mobile devices are based on mobile chips provided by Qualcomm.

Nvidia said it has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Delaware and has also filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington, D.C. This is a typical approach for infringement lawsuits because district courts can make decisions on financial damages, while the ITC cannot; but at the same time, the ITC can more easily ban infringing products from entering the U.S. market than district courts.

Qualcomm and Samsung declined to comment.
