5K iMac reveals Apple's cutting-edge technology

As the first all-in-one computer with a 5K display, Apple's new generation 27-inch iMac has attracted much attention from users. It has been confirmed that its panel comes from LG Display, but there are still problems with the refresh rate and interface.

You should know that the current DisplayPort 1.2 interface can only achieve a maximum resolution of 4K@60Hz. If the resolution is further increased to 5K, the transmission bandwidth should not be able to meet the needs of high refresh rates. Therefore, many foreign media have speculated that the refresh rate of the 5K screen iMac is actually only 30Hz.

Now this statement finally has a final answer. After actual testing, arstechnica found that the screen refresh rate of the 5K iMac is indeed 60Hz, not the rumored 30Hz. This also shows from another perspective that the display interface used by Apple is definitely not DisplayPort 1.2, otherwise it would not be able to meet such a high bandwidth requirement.

Judging from iFixit's previous disassembly, the 5K-screen iMac should use Apple's usual eDP interface, which has 60 pins, while the general eDP 1.2 pins should be 40, so it is obviously not an eDP 1.2 interface.

Foreign media speculated that Apple used a non-standardized eDP 1.3 interface here, or simply integrated two eDP 1.2s together to output 5K signals, but which specific solution was adopted remains to be further confirmed.
