According to foreign media reports, Microsoft recently sent an email to Windows Phone application developers, announcing that after December 31 this year, developers will no longer be allowed to unlock any Windows Phone 7.x devices for application development and testing. However, Microsoft reminded developers to complete device unlocking as soon as possible before the deadline so that they can continue to test applications in the next two years. Microsoft said that after December 31, 2014, the unlocking function of Windows Phone 7.x devices will be invalid. This means that developers who have not unlocked Windows Phone 7.x devices will not have the right to test applications directly on the device through Visual Studio. Fortunately, this change will not affect applications submitted to the Windows Phone Store, nor will it affect users using Windows Phone 7.x devices. At the same time, Microsoft also suggested that application testing can still be carried out on other unlocked devices or Windows Phone simulators, and Beta versions of applications can also be submitted to the Windows Developer Center for testing. In this regard, industry insiders said that Microsoft's statement indicates that the retirement of Windows Phone 7.x is accelerating. Just one month ago, Microsoft officially terminated mainstream support for the Windows Phone 7.8 system. Now is the time to upgrade to Windows Phone 8/8.1. According to the latest report, Windows Phone 8.1 now accounts for 46.7% of all WP versions, WP8 has dropped to 36.8%, and Windows Phone 7.x has remained basically unchanged at 16.6%. In addition, Nokia still stands out among OEM manufacturers, accounting for 94.99%, while HTC only accounts for 3.17% and Samsung accounts for 1.15%.
