Scientists say they have invented a new type of battery that, if used in a smartphone, would take just one minute to fully charge.

Scientists hope that this newly developed aluminum battery can replace the lithium batteries currently used in laptops and mobile phones.

In addition to the unprecedentedly fast charging time, this aluminum battery is safer than lithium batteries, less likely to catch fire, and more environmentally friendly than No. 5 and No. 7 dry batteries.

This research result was published in the journal Nature. Dai Hongjie, the leader of the research team and a professor of chemistry at Stanford University, believes that this is a major breakthrough in the development of rechargeable aluminum batteries, because rechargeable aluminum batteries basically did not exist before, especially aluminum batteries with these excellent properties.

"We have developed a rechargeable aluminum battery that may replace current battery products, such as alkaline batteries, which are harmful to the environment," Dai said.

It is reported that in tests, the aluminum battery has gone through more than 7,500 charge and discharge cycles without losing capacity. This performance exceeds other types of aluminum batteries, which can no longer be used after about 100 cycles, and lithium batteries can only withstand about 1,000 cycles.

The researchers suggest that the aluminum batteries could also be used to store renewable energy in power grids in the future, and could also be used in electric vehicles.

Researchers say that another major feature of this aluminum battery is its elasticity, and bending and folding do not affect its performance. In addition, compared with lithium, aluminum is a relatively cheap metal.
