According to statistics, iOS users unlock their screens 80 times a day on average, while Android users do it even more frequently, lighting up their screens 150 times a day on average, which is not much less than iOS users. Behind such frequent unlocking is the frequent input of passwords or patterns to unlock. Just think about it and you will know that a lot of time is wasted every day. At this time, the advantages of fingerprint recognition phones are reflected. You can unlock with a light press, and you don’t need to enter a password every time. Fingerprint recognition is no longer a new thing in our lives. In many movies, you can still see a handsome agent cracking fingerprint recognition information to sneak into a building to steal intelligence. Many companies have also begun to use fingerprint clocking machines for attendance. Due to the uniqueness of fingerprint recognition, and the fact that fingerprint recognition technology is the most mature among many biometric technologies, fingerprint recognition is currently the most mainstream biometric solution. Fingerprint recognition is the main biometric recognition method, accounting for two-thirds of the market share. In the mobile phone industry, Motorola was the first company to introduce fingerprint recognition design, but it was not them who promoted the technology, but Apple. In 2013, Apple first supported Touch ID fingerprint recognition technology in iPhone 5s. Since then, the Android camp has also attached importance to fingerprint recognition, and more and more smartphones support fingerprint recognition sensors. In this issue of Super Classroom, we have summarized the main fingerprint recognition technology suppliers and technical solutions to see what kind of fingerprint recognition solutions are used in recently released mobile phones. Common fingerprint recognition solution manufacturers Apple/AuthenTec: AuthenTec is one of the most well-known and technologically advanced smartphone fingerprint recognition solution manufacturers. It was acquired by Apple for US$356 million in 2012. It no longer provides fingerprint recognition solutions to the outside world and focuses on serving Apple iPhone phones. The company's representative technology is TruePrint. In addition to capacitive sensors, this technology can also read the active layer information under the skin surface through radio frequency chips. This is the real location of human fingerprint information, so their fingerprint recognition solution is more accurate and not affected by the surface of the skin. The security and reliability are very good. iPhone 5s and later phones all use AhthunTech's fingerprint solution . Synaptics/Validity: Validity is an American fingerprint recognition technology company that was acquired by Synaptics for $255 million in 2013. Validity's sliding fingerprint recognition sensor was very popular earlier and was widely used in laptops. Samsung's Galaxy S5 also used their solution, but the sliding solution experience was very poor and is now basically eliminated. Fingerprint Cards: FPC for short, is a Swedish company that previously mainly provided fingerprint recognition technology for banks, but now fingerprint recognition sensors used in smartphones also account for FPC's main revenue. FPC also had a sliding solution earlier, but has now switched to a touch solution. The FPC10XX/11XX series sensors are the mainstream choice for most fingerprint recognition phones in China, especially the design placed on the back, which is widely used in Huawei, Xiaomi and other companies' phones. Goodix: The above three companies are all foreign companies, while Godix is a local company in Shenzhen, China. In the past two years, it has made rapid progress in fingerprint recognition chips, so much so that Synopsys has become "envious" and sued Goodix for infringement. The lawsuit between the two parties has not yet been settled. Goodix also has unique technology in its hands and will certainly not give in easily. Unlike FPC solutions that are often used in the back, the fingerprint recognition developed by Goodix is more used on the front panel of mobile phones. In particular, the Meizu MX4 Pro is the world's first Android phone with front-pressing fingerprint recognition, which uses Goodix's sapphire fingerprint recognition chip. Meizu used Goodix's solution in the subsequent MX5, Pro 5 and Pro 6. It is worth mentioning that this year Goodix demonstrated the world's first live fingerprint recognition technology, which is more secure and no longer afraid of bad guys using fake fingerprint films to crack. The above four companies can be said to be the most common and mainstream smartphone fingerprint recognition solution companies. However, there are many other companies in the industry , such as CrucialTech in South Korea, IDEX in Norway, Shanghai Sili Micro in China, Suzhou Mindray Micro, and Dontech and Maohui in Taiwan . However, their solutions are not common on smartphones (or many manufacturers are embarrassed to mention the source of their fingerprint recognition). Common smartphone fingerprint recognition solutions According to the different collection methods and layout methods of fingerprint recognition, the common smartphone fingerprint recognition solutions are briefly summarized as shown in the figure below: Apple Touch ID: exclusive formula, integrated hardware and software Like many technologies used by Apple, they are not the first company to bring fingerprint recognition to mobile phones, but Apple's fingerprint recognition is the best in smartphones, because Apple is used to exclusive customization when doing an important solution, so they directly bought AuthenTech. Apple's Touch ID fingerprint recognition solution Apple used fingerprint recognition for the first time on the iPhone 5s. The technology is called Touch ID. It is not a simple fingerprint recognition, but a combination with the Home keyboard of its own mobile phone. The most criticized iPhone design is that all operations must rely on the Home key, but the combination of the Home key and fingerprint recognition gives Apple an advantage, because the iPhone's Home key is round and fits the finger better than a rectangle. For Touch ID, Apple has introduced the features of the solution in detail - it consists of sapphire protective glass, stainless steel detection ring, Touch ID sensor and touch switch. The core is the TruePrint technology in the Touch ID sensor, because the solution not only uses capacitive sensors, but also uses radio frequency technology to realize double verification of the dermis layer information of the human skin, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of recognition, and is not easily affected by dirt on the skin surface. At the system and application level, Apple Touch ID also has a unique algorithm, which not only ensures that fingerprint information is read quickly, but also ensures the absolute security of fingerprint information to prevent user security information from being stolen. Apple also makes the most of its use of Touch ID. In addition to unlocking, Touch ID can also be used for mobile payments, App download verification, etc. Synopsys/Validity: Slide unlock is eliminated, touch unlock In addition to Apple's introduction of Touch ID, Android manufacturers have also begun to seek to introduce fingerprint recognition. Samsung has also added fingerprint recognition to the Galaxy S5 mobile phone, and has also combined it with the Home button. However, the solution used at the time was from Validity, and the fingerprint recognition method was sliding, which did not conform to the normal use logic, and the experience was relatively poor. HTC's One Max mobile phone also uses a similar solution, which requires sliding to unlock, but the fingerprint recognition is rear-mounted. Needless to say, the final outcome is also eliminated. However, what is interesting is that the rear-mounted fingerprint recognition solution of HTC One Max has been "copied" by many domestic mobile phone manufacturers. From high-end to thousand-yuan phones, this rear-mounted fingerprint recognition has become a standard design for many mobile phones. After S5, Synaptics' touch fingerprint sensor was applied to Samsung's Galaxy S6 and the latest Galaxy S7 phones. I used Note 5 before, and the fingerprint recognition was not very sensitive. The Galaxy S7 should use a new generation of sensors, and the recognition rate and speed are better. However, the fingerprint recognition speed of S7 edge is not particularly fast. For details, please refer to our subsequent fingerprint recognition test. FPC: Both front and rear can be used, one of the most mainstream choices The fingerprint recognition solution of Swedish FPC company can be said to be the most mainstream Android fingerprint recognition solution at present. Most domestic smartphones such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and 360 use FPC fingerprint sensors. Their solution also had sliding unlocking in the early days, such as Vivo's Xplay 3S, but now it is basically touch recognition, and the layout is front and rear. In FPC's fingerprint recognition solution, Huawei is a typical rear-mounted faction. This design has been in place since Mate 7, because most Huawei phones have virtual keys on the screen and no Home button. If it is front-mounted, the Home button can only be forcibly created, which will affect the overall design of the phone. In the latest P9 mobile phone, Huawei's fingerprint recognition has been upgraded to 3D fingerprint recognition, which is said to be able to effectively prevent 2D fake fingerprint film and is safer. In addition, Huawei also has its own SoC processor. Starting from the Kirin 92X series processor, Huawei also supports TrustZone security technology. In fact, there is a separate area in the processor to store security-related information, which is isolated from other information and has strict permission restrictions, thus improving the security of fingerprint information. In addition to unlocking, domestic fingerprint recognition mobile phones are actually not as good as Apple or even Samsung in terms of security and payment. Many mobile phones now cannot support Alipay fingerprint payment, let alone independent mobile payment solutions. However, domestic manufacturers are not helpless. They have developed other uses for fingerprint recognition, including taking pictures, file encryption, etc., which can be regarded as enriching some gameplay. Rear-mounted FPC fingerprint recognition mobile phones are very common, but there are also front-mounted ones. Xiaomi Mi 5 also uses FPC fingerprint recognition sensors, but it is front-mounted and combined with the Home button - although Xiaomi's mobile phones did not have a Home button before, this time they had to make a Home button. It is worth mentioning that Xiaomi Mi 5 uses the latest FPC1245 sensor, which is newer than the FP10XX/11XX series used by other manufacturers (Redmi Note 3 uses FPC1035). In the previous review, we also said that the fingerprint recognition speed of Xiaomi Mi 5 is still very fast, but the Home button is relatively narrow and long, so the feel is not very good. Goodix: Meizu's favorite, combined with mBack Huawei's Mate 7 is known as the first press-type fingerprint recognition mobile phone, but it is rear-mounted, while Meizu claims that their MX4 Pro is the first front-press fingerprint recognition Android phone. Their solution comes from the domestic Goodix company. Goodix's glass fingerprint recognition sensor has also become Meizu's favorite. A series of mobile phones after that use Goodix's solution, including Pro 5 and the latest Pro 6 mobile phone. Goodix, a domestic company, can be said to have come from behind in the field of fingerprint recognition. It is one of the most common fingerprint recognition solution suppliers besides iPhone and FPC. The Le 2 Pro, Nubia Z11 mini released in the past few days, and the previous Gionee, Vivo X6 and other mobile phones have begun to use Goodix solutions. Goodix's fingerprint recognition module features, among which the glass solution is the most common. Goodix's fingerprint recognition has several types, such as glass, sapphire, coating and IFS. Sapphire and IFS solutions have the best performance, but the cost is also high. The glass solution is the most common, and the glass and the mobile phone screen glass are the same material, which is easier to match, so it is very suitable for the front layout solution. We most often see Goodix's fingerprint recognition solution on Meizu's mobile phones. The icing on the cake is that Meizu has opened the era of mBack key after abandoning the SB virtual key, which has changed from being criticized to being well received. Fingerprint recognition is also combined with mBack, which is a patent of Meizu mobile phones. Side fingerprint: It looks good . It may be controversial to put the fingerprint recognition key on the front or back of the mobile phone - it is inconvenient to put it on the back, and it will face another entanglement if it is placed on the front. Companies such as Samsung and Apple that have previously designed the Home button are fine. Companies that did not use the Home button before either forced a Home button or made a non-pressable Home button like the OnePlus 2, but neither of these two is the most ideal solution. Some mobile phones use side fingerprint recognition. If the front and back do not work, then the only option is the power button on the side. In theory, the integration of the fingerprint recognition button and the power button is a perfect match. The most commonly used function of the power button is to unlock the screen. Guided by this concept, many mobile phones have also begun to use side fingerprint recognition design, including Nubia's Z9 Max, Sony's Xperia Z5 series, Huawei Honor 7i, etc. Among them, the fingerprint recognition solution used by Nubia Z9 Max comes from Taiwan's Shield Company, while Sony Z5 and Honor 7i use the FPC1145 fingerprint recognition module. Side fingerprint recognition mobile phones are currently "outliers". Although the concept of this technology is the best, a key problem with side fingerprint recognition is that the power button cannot be made too large or too thick, so the fingerprint recognition area cannot be very large, which affects the fingerprint recognition rate and feel. If this problem is not solved, side fingerprint recognition will only look good and cannot be practical. Summary: 2016 can be said to be a key year for China's smartphones to fully turn to fingerprint recognition. It is unimaginable that mid-to-high-end mobile phones do not have fingerprint recognition. Even cheap phones priced at 599 yuan now use fingerprint recognition, such as the F4 mobile phone recently released by 360. It can be said that there is no threshold for fingerprint recognition mobile phones this year, and manufacturers have to use them even if they don't want to. The inherent high security and convenience of fingerprint recognition have brought new experience to players using smartphones, but everyone needs to stay sober - fingerprint recognition of smartphones is a complete set of solutions, from hardware to system to application, manufacturers should provide one-stop service, and strictly guarantee the privacy and security of users while facilitating users. In this regard, Apple's solution is the best. Domestic manufacturers' fingerprint recognition mobile phones are difficult to do well at the application level, not to mention the security issues. Many fingerprint recognition mobile phones priced in the thousands of yuan cannot support Alipay fingerprint payment, let alone other applications. By the way, I would also like to advise everyone not to rely too much on fingerprint unlocking - you think it is very convenient and safe, but a friend of mine got drunk, and his wife used his finger to unlock his phone while he was sleeping, and then the money in his Alipay account was gone, and then his WeChat and call records were turned out, the consequences...
