The best display ever? An in-depth analysis of the iPhone 7 screen

When you first see the iPhone 7 screen, to be honest, there is not much difference between it and the iPhone 6 in 2014 and the iPhone 6s in 2015. But as we look more closely at the screen, we find that it is actually a significant improvement over the iPhone 6 screen.

How is it reflected? iPhone 7 has two standard color gamuts, one is DCI-P3 wide color gamut, which is mostly used in 4K UHD TVs and cinemas, and the other is the traditional sRGB/Rec.709 (slightly narrower color gamut), which is used by most consumer products such as cameras, ordinary TVs, computers, photos, videos, movies, etc. The color accuracy of both modes on iPhone 7 is very perfect. In addition, only three manufacturers currently use this DCI-P3 wide color gamut standard on their mobile phones and tablets. For Apple, this is a very obvious advantage, and other manufacturers need to catch up quickly. In automatic brightness mode, the highest brightness measured by iPhone 7 in a harsh light environment is 705 nits. The measured contrast of iPhone 7 is a new high in the IPS LCD display category. The screen reflectivity ratio of iPhone 7 is almost the lowest among all mobile phones. Given that the LCD screen of iPhone 7 performs so well, I believe many people will think that Apple should not use OLED displays on future iPhones. 4K UHD TVs also use this DCI-P3 wide color gamut standard. The new iPhone 7 supports two standard color gamuts, DCI-P3 wide color gamut and sRGB/Rec.709. Most smartphones and tablets only support sRGB/Rec.709, while the DCI-P3 color gamut is 26% wider.

iPhone 7 Color Gamut Given that iPhone 7 now has two color gamut standards, a new color management system is needed to display the narrower sRGB/Rec.709 color gamut (regenerated from DCI-P3). In DCI-P3 mode, 102% of the P3 color gamut is covered, while in sRGB/Rec.709, 104% of the sRGB color gamut is covered. In addition, iPhone 7 can detect whether the image content is in the DCI-P3 color gamut standard, and if so, it can automatically switch to this color gamut for display. Screen Brightness & Contrast The maximum brightness of iPhone 7 is 602 cd/㎡, which is the highest average image level we have tested for all mobile phones (including full screen display of white). Although this result is lower than the maximum brightness of iPhone 7*625 nits claimed by Apple, after turning on automatic brightness, the peak brightness of iPhone 7 can soar to a higher level, but the screen brightness can only soar to this height in a strong light environment, so the screen brightness is around the average value most of the time. We measured the contrast ratio of iPhone 7 to be 1762:1, which is very good for a mobile phone and the highest among all IPS LCD displays, even higher than the 1400:1 advertised by Apple. After turning on the automatic adjustment of screen brightness, the screen brightness of iPhone 7 can soar to 705cd/㎡ in bright light environment. With such high brightness and low reflectivity, the high brightness environment contrast ratio of iPhone 7 is 137 to 160, which is also the highest value we have ever measured. Generally, when light shines on the screen of a mobile phone, it will form a reflection, and then the color displayed on the screen will also be affected, weakening the image contrast. Therefore, the lower the screen reflectivity, the better. The lower the reflectivity, the higher the contrast ratio of the screen, which also has a great impact on the screen brightness. You can try to take a mobile phone or tablet and turn off the screen. You should be able to see the light reflection on the screen. The higher the brightness of the ambient light, the more obvious the reflection. The iPhone 7 has a screen reflectivity of 4.4%, which is also the lowest value we have ever measured, but it is still slightly lower than the 1.7% of the iPad Pro 9.7 (which uses an AR anti-reflective coating). Unfortunately, the AR coating used on the iPad Pro cannot be applied to mobile phones because it is prone to wear and scratching. After all, mobile phones are placed in pockets or thrown around every day, so using this type of coating is not very ideal. At present, there are also many companies developing a coating technology that is not only low in reflectivity but also durable. I believe that such products will be born soon. Given the power consumption constraints and heating issues, low reflectivity technology is crucial to improving the brightness of mobile phone screens. Color accuracy It is not easy to output high absolute color accuracy because the colors displayed by the display must be extremely accurate. In order to achieve accurate color accuracy, the display needs to match the standard color gamut used by various multimedia content, no more and no less, just right. In addition, the display needs to have a precise intensity scale (i.e. grayscale) and white point (White Point).
iPhone 6 & iPhone 7 Absolute Color Accuracy We were very impressed by the absolute color accuracy of iPhone 7, with a color accuracy of only 1.1 JNCD (Just Noticeable Color Difference* used to reflect the degree of color shift) in sRGB/Rec.709 and only 1.0 JNCD under the wide color gamut DCI-P3, which is simply synonymous with perfection.
iPhone 6 & iPhone 7 spectrum iPhone 7 has an average luminance accuracy of ±2% in sRGB/Rec.709 and ±2% in wide color gamut DCI-P3, which is very helpful when rendering colors. In night mode, the blue part of the iPhone 7 spectrum is below 490nm. Viewing angle All iPhones and iPads use IPS LCD displays, so we think the viewing angle should be similar to other devices. In our lab tests, the viewing angle of iPhone 7 is still great, with almost no perceptible color shift. It can maintain a contrast ratio of 1000:1 when viewing the screen in landscape or portrait mode at a 30-degree tilt, but it is worth noting that the brightness is affected to a certain extent after tilting 30 degrees, reducing the brightness by 55%. Screen power consumption is one of the important factors affecting battery life. After complex tests in the laboratory, we were surprised to find that the energy efficiency ratio of the iPhone 7 display is 7% higher than that of the iPhone 6. To sum up the amazing features of the iPhone 7 screen: The highest absolute color accuracy of all mobile phone displays (1.1 JNCD) The highest brightness accuracy of all mobile phone displays (±2%) Very accurate contrast and grayscale, with a gamma value of 2.21 Highest peak brightness *602 nits to 705 nits The highest contrast ratio of all mobile phone displays in IPS LCD, 1762:1 The lowest screen reflectivity of all mobile phone displays (4.4%) The color difference caused by increasing the observation angle is also the smallest (2.1 JNCD or lower)
