People who use social media more frequently are more likely to be depressed and anxious

A recent study found that the number of social media accounts can reflect a person's mental health. Recent research data from the University of Pittsburgh School of Health Sciences showed that young people who use 7 to 11 social media accounts at the same time are three times more likely to have symptoms of depression and anxiety than those who only have 1 to 2 social media accounts.

The main author of the study, Dr. Brian A. Primack, and his team conducted a survey in 2014, with a total of 1,787 people aged between 19 and 32. The survey used a depression assessment questionnaire to investigate the association between social media use and depression. The questionnaire involved the 11 most popular social media platforms at the time: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine and LinkedIn. The final results showed that young people who used 7 to 11 social media at the same time had a 3 times higher rate of depression and anxiety symptoms than those who only had 1 to 2 social media accounts. The researchers said that there are two possible reasons for this phenomenon. One is depression and anxiety caused by trying to maintain a sense of presence on multiple platforms, and the other is that people who already suffer from depression or anxiety symptoms hope to create a comfortable and accepted atmosphere for themselves through multi-channel social media. As for who is the cause and who is the effect, further research is needed to determine.
