Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence: The Future of AI Research

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence has released a new report, "The Future of AI Research". Reasoning has long been considered a core feature of human intelligence. Reasoning is used to derive new information from a given base of knowledge; when reliable formal reasoning is used, this new information is guaranteed to be correct, otherwise it is just plausible.

AI research has spawned a range of automated reasoning techniques. These reasoning techniques have led to AI algorithms and systems, including SAT, SMT and constraint solvers, and probabilistic graphical models, all of which play an important role in key real-world applications.

While large pre-trained systems such as LLMs have made impressive progress in reasoning capabilities, more research is needed to ensure the correctness and depth of the reasoning they perform; such guarantees are particularly important for AI agents operating autonomously.

An AI system is factual if it avoids outputting false statements. Improving the factuality of AI systems based on large language models based on neural networks is arguably the largest industry in AI research today.

Trustworthiness expands trust criteria to include human understandability, robustness, and incorporation of human values. Lack of trustworthiness has been a barrier to the deployment of AI systems in critical applications.

Methods to improve the factuality and trustworthiness of AI systems include fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation, verification of machine outputs, and replacing complex models with simpler, more understandable ones.

Multi-agent systems have evolved from rule-based autonomy to collaborative AI, emphasizing collaboration, negotiation, and ethical alignment.

The rise of agent AI powered by LLMs brings new opportunities for flexible decision making, but also challenges in efficiency and complexity.

Integrating collaborative AI with generative models requires balancing adaptability, transparency, and computational feasibility in multi-agent environments.

AI systems introduce unique evaluation challenges that go well beyond the scope of standard software verification and validation methodologies.

New insights and methods are needed to evaluate AI systems to provide assurance of trustworthy, large-scale deployment.

The rapid development of AI makes ethical and safety risks more urgent and interconnected, and we currently lack the technical and regulatory mechanisms to address these issues.

Emerging threats require immediate attention, as do the ethical implications of new AI technologies. Ethical and safety challenges require interdisciplinary collaboration, continued oversight, and clearer accountability for AI development.
