Beijing and Shanghai from a programmer's perspective

area

Beijing: 16,410.54 square kilometers

Shanghai: 6,340.5 square kilometers

population

Beijing: 21.516 million people

Shanghai: 25 million

Just looking at the numbers, friends who have lived in Beijing for a long time but have never lived in Shanghai will definitely think that the traffic situation in Shanghai is terrible.

If you think about it, you will know that 25 million people/6340.5 square kilometers is higher than the population density of Beijing.

In fact, this is not the case.

I went to college at the North China Electric Power University in Beijing, which is near Huilongguan in Changping District, Beijing. After graduating from college, I have always rented a place in Huilongguan. The reasons are simple: one, it is familiar, and the other is that the rental price is cheap.

Anyone who has been to Beijing knows that Tiantongyuan and Huilongguan are basically the places where college students and migrant workers live most often. Because these two places are located between the fifth and sixth ring roads and are relatively remote, the rent is definitely much cheaper.

There are also two subway stations in Huilongguan, Longze Station and Huilongguan Station, so travel is quite convenient.

However, there is a problem. Beijing's urban planning is very problematic. Simply put, the phenomenon of agglomeration is very serious.

To give a simple example, I go to Huilongguan subway every morning to go to work, and I found a very interesting phenomenon. On Line 13, the Xizhimen direction is often full of people, but the number of people going to Dongzhimen on the opposite side is almost 50% less.

Then inevitably, the total flow of people is just the opposite when getting off work.

It can be seen that most of the offices in Beijing are located in the west, and most of the residents are in the east.

If we think more deeply, Haidian District is home to many universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, China University of Geosciences, Beijing Language and Culture University, Beihang University, China Agricultural University, China University of Mining and Technology, and Beijing University of Science and Technology. So, in order to recruit more easily, will companies give priority to choosing locations close to these places?

As a result, most of the companies are in the west.

Dongzhimen is home to a large number of shopping malls and restaurants, as well as Workers' Stadium, nightclubs, etc. A place with a sense of life will naturally attract people to live there.

The problem this causes is that everyone flocks to Xizhimen to go to work, and everyone flocks to Dongzhimen to get off work. The past few years that I have worked in Beijing have basically been spent on transportation. I once had a job near the China World Trade Center. What was my route like?

Line 13 Huilongguan-> Shaoyaoju (6 stations in total)-> Transfer to Line 10-> Jintaixizhao Station (7 stations in total) and then walk to the company, a total of one hour and thirty minutes. What's even more stupid is that I raised an Alaskan in 2013, and I have to get up half an hour earlier every day to walk the dog.

So I need to get up at 6:30 every day, walk the dog for half an hour, go home at 7:00 to wash up for 10 minutes, and go out. I arrive at the company around 8:50, and can barely arrive before 9:00.

At that time, the technology was not very advanced, and the work content was difficult (maps, short video recording, audio compression, various animation interactions), so I was under a lot of pressure every day. It caused me to lose my hair during that period. When I took a shower, a clump of hair would fall out. My weight was also the highest since high school.

The lightest was about 70kg (I have now soared to 85kg). Now I think about where the pressure at that time came from? In fact, it was not the pressure of survival, because my parents are doctors and the family does not rely on me at all. In addition, my parents often teased me that if I couldn't make it, they would buy me a few hundred sheep and let me go back to Xinjiang to herd sheep. So there was no so-called survival pressure. The main pressure was the anxiety caused by the lack of skills.

Now that we have talked about the disadvantages, are there any advantages?

Of course, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds.

I scanned all the audio, video and map sessions of WWDC in 2011 and 2012. And because I work on a wide variety of subjects, I have dabbled in every aspect. For example, I know a little bit about swords, spears, halberds, axes, hooks and forks, although I am not proficient in them.

But the good thing is that no matter what I encounter in the future, I can quickly locate where to find the corresponding information.

The second benefit is that my English ability is so good that it is the best in my life. Why? Because my previous companies were in India, France, Spain, South Africa, Canada, and Belgium. I can understand English with different accents. So when I watch the wwdc video,

It’s also easier.

I have always felt that if you have a good level of math and English, learning programming is a natural thing.

I accidentally said a lot of gossip. Let's get back to the point.

So the question is, what is so good about Beijing?

Simply put, Beijing is a great place for both novices and experts.

why?

For rookies, Beijing has countless technical experts and the motivation to keep you moving forward every day.

For experts, Beijing has countless opportunities and a superb financing environment, as well as a very high probability of finding suitable entrepreneurial partners.

But it is hell for the midfielder who is stagnant.

why?

Let’s think about what the definition of middle hand is.

I tentatively define it as a relatively stable job, but it is more difficult to move forward. Because if it is a technical step forward, it will be more difficult than before, because 10 points to 70 points and 70 points to 80 points are not the same level of difficulty.

From 80 points to 90 points is another way.

In the position, it is also difficult to climb up due to personality and other issues. Everyone says that after the age of 30, you should switch to management. Let me ask you a simple question: do you think what you think is what you think? Why should you manage instead of being managed? What special abilities do you have that others appreciate?

In life, you may have a stable girlfriend or be married. But you may not have a house, or you may have a house but still have to pay the mortgage. Life is tight. In this case, it is even more difficult for people to make a drastic change. Because at this time, a rash change may not be painful.

, but rather, you feel miserable. Because you are no longer in a situation where you can feed your family and feed them. You are carrying the pressure of the whole family.

I would recommend that freshly graduated college students go to Beijing to experience life in a big city. I think it is a good training for yourself, and if you work in IT, you will definitely improve your skills. This is something that other cities cannot give you.

Every day in Beijing, when I wake up in the morning and walk on the street, I have only one thought: to study hard and work hard.

After talking about Beijing, let's talk about Shanghai. Since I have just been in Shanghai for a little over a month, my understanding of Shanghai is definitely far less than that of Beijing. So let's just talk about it briefly.

What is the general impression of the two cities among the public?

Beijing: Political and Cultural Center

Shanghai: Financial Center

So, political culture == life-like and romantic, financial center == everything is extremely expensive.

Haha, forgive me for being so simplistic and crude, but the problem is that I really thought so before.

But what is the reality? Shanghai is not extremely expensive in all aspects. At least food and clothing are similar to Beijing. Transportation is a little more expensive, but housing is cheaper than Beijing. Beijing is actually no longer suitable for living.

Shanghai is a city with a strong sense of life.

Why do you say that?

This is closely related to the city planning mentioned above. Beijing is a city with a very serious concentration of people. That is, the workplaces are clustered together, and the residences are also clustered together. Therefore, when going to work, everyone goes to the same place.

When we get off work, we all go to the same place.

Shanghai's distribution is radiated by residential areas.

In every community, you can find what you want within a few steps, such as watching movies, shopping, singing, and basically everything around. Although they are not large in scale, they are well decorated. Small but beautiful.

Beijing is indeed grand, with cinemas, shopping malls and entertainment venues that are all very upscale, but they are far away.

I now ride a bicycle to get off work, because Shanghai has very complete bicycle lanes, almost every road has a bicycle lane. Secondly, because the rent is relatively cheap, I can rent a house near the company, and it only takes 5 minutes to get there every day.

The work pressure is also relatively low, because the company is now completely managed in the Google style. No need to punch in, flexible working hours, even the workstation is not fixed, you can sit anywhere, lie down and work.

There are a lot of girls in the company, and it's a pleasure to watch them every day. So I think the overall pressure in Shanghai is much less than that in Beijing.

These are just my personal opinions, I hope they can be of some help to you.

If life is a game, why can't I be the winner?
