A year ago, the "Tablet" section on Google's official website disappeared. Although it was later proved to be a bug, the occurrence of this incident was still an ominous sign. At the end of last year, Google launched the Pixel Slate, hoping that the device would be a replacement for its high-end Pixelbook. However, the device seems a bit redundant and will be the last one. The company recently announced that it will officially abandon the tablet business and cancel two devices that have not yet been released to the public. "For Google's third-party hardware efforts, we will be focusing on Chrome OS laptops and will continue to support Pixel Slate," a Google spokesperson said. In other words, Google will not launch a successor to the Pixel Slate, but will continue to provide support for existing models. Rick Osterloh, who leads Google's hardware business, said on Twitter: "Google's HARDWARE team will be focused on building the laptops of the future, but make no mistake, the Android and Chrome OS teams are 100% committed to long-term collaboration with tablet partners in market (consumer, enterprise, education)." Google revealed two unannounced products that were originally scheduled to be launched sometime after 2019. These tablets are smaller than the Pixel Slate. The company also explained that warranty issues led to the cancellation of these two products and the entire tablet project. In addition, most of the hardware team employees are expected to move to the Pixelbook laptop team. So, goodbye, Google Tablet. |
