iPhone XR becomes the most popular smartphone in 2019

The "Smartphone Model Market Tracking" report released today by market research firm Omdia shows that in terms of shipments, Apple's iPhone XR has become the most market-appealing smartphone product in 2019, followed closely by the latest iPhone 11 launched in September 2019.

Data shows that in 2019, the shipments of iPhone XR were about 46.3 million units, higher than the shipments of the latest iPhone 11. But the iPhone XR has been sold for a whole year after all, and the potential of iPhone 11 cannot be underestimated. Omdia said that as the latest affordable mobile phone launched by Apple, the total shipments of iPhone 11 from September last year to now have reached 37.3 million units.

Samsung's Galaxy A10, Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A20 smartphones followed closely behind Apple, with shipments of 30.3 million, 24.2 million and 19.2 million units respectively, ranking third, fourth and fifth in total shipments.

Apple's high-end iPhone 11 Pro Max shipped 17.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2019, ranking sixth. The iPhone 8, which ranked seventh, shipped slightly less than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, at 17.4 million units. The iPhone 11 Pro shipped 15.5 million units, ranking ninth.

Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research and analysis at Omdia, said: "Apple has been ranked first and second in global smartphone shipments for more than five consecutive years. Compared with other competitors, Apple has launched a limited number of mobile phone models, so sales can be concentrated on a few best-selling smartphones, such as the iPhone XR."

The analysis company also pointed out that overall iPhone shipments fell for the second time in many years, with shipments falling 4.6% in 2019. Compared with the 5.1% year-on-year decline in overall iPhone shipments in 2018, this data has improved.
