Have you ever seen them? The white forelock on the head sparkles in the sun, as if wearing a mysterious white bone crown. The white-bone crested bird is 35 to 43 cm long and weighs 430 to 835 grams. It is a medium-sized waterfowl of the genus Coot, family Raccoon, order Gruiformes. Males and females are similar. The iris is reddish brown, the beak is white, the tarsus is grayish yellow-green, and the toes and webs are grayish white. The adult white-bone crested bird is grayish black all over, and the most notable feature is the white forelock on the head. The female bird's forelock is slightly smaller. The feathers of the young bird are mainly gray, while the throat and the front of the neck are close to white.

The toes of the white-bone pheasant have well-developed webbed feet, making them good swimmers. In the water, they can easily dive and catch food. Moreover, they are equally agile when looking for food on the ground. Their diet is very wide, eating small fish, shrimps, insects and a variety of aquatic plants, as well as berries and seeds of terrestrial shrubs. This omnivorous eating habit makes the white-bone pheasant play an important role in the ecosystem. They not only control the growth of aquatic plants and maintain the ecological balance of the water body, but also protect the farmland around the water body by preying on pests.

The breeding season of white-bone is from May to July. Their nests are usually made of reeds or cattails that are bent and piled up, so the nests are closely connected to the surrounding reeds and water plants instead of floating on the water. When the water level rises, the nest will rise accordingly, and when the water level drops, the nest will also drop. This ability allows the nest of the white-bone to remain stable in an environment with changing water levels.
