Ministry of Public Security: In 2019, the number of private cars in China exceeded 200 million for the first time, and the total number of drivers reached 435 million

According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security, in 2019, 32.14 million new motor vehicles were registered nationwide, and the motor vehicle stock reached 348 million, including 25.78 million new registered cars, and the car stock reached 260 million; the number of motor vehicle drivers reached 435 million, including 397 million car drivers.

There are 66 cities in China with more than one million cars. By the end of 2019, the number of cars in China reached 260 million, an increase of 21.22 million (excluding scrapped and deregistered cars, the same below) and 8.83% compared with the end of 2018.

The number of cars in 66 cities across the country exceeds one million, and in 30 cities it exceeds two million. Among them, 11 cities including Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Shenzhen, Xi'an, Wuhan, Dongguan and Tianjin have more than three million cars.

The number of private cars exceeded 200 million for the first time. By the end of 2019, the number of small passenger cars reached 220 million, an increase of 19.26 million or 9.37% compared with the end of 2018. Among them, the number of private cars (private small and micro passenger cars) reached 207 million, exceeding 200 million for the first time, with an average annual increase of 19.66 million in the past five years.

The number of new energy vehicles in China reached 3.81 million. By the end of 2019, the number of new energy vehicles in China reached 3.81 million, accounting for 1.46% of the total number of vehicles. Compared with the end of 2018, it increased by 1.2 million, an increase of 46.05%. Among them, the number of pure electric vehicles was 3.1 million, accounting for 81.19% of the total number of new energy vehicles. The increase in new energy vehicles has exceeded 1 million for two consecutive years, showing a rapid growth trend.

The number of vehicle transfer registrations continues to grow. In 2019, the national public security traffic management departments handled a total of 25.74 million motor vehicle transfer registrations, of which 24.44 million were vehicle transfer registrations, accounting for 94.94%, an increase of 3.86 million over 2018, an increase of 18.76%. In the past five years, the ratio of vehicle transfer registrations to vehicle registrations has increased from 0.59 to 0.95, reflecting the increasingly active second-hand car market.

The number of motor vehicle drivers reached 435 million. In 2019, the number of motor vehicle drivers in China reached 435 million, of which 397 million were car drivers, accounting for 91.26% of the total number of drivers. In 2019, the number of newly licensed drivers (with less than 1 year of driving experience) reached 29.43 million, accounting for 6.76% of the total number of motor vehicle drivers in China.
