I'm shocked! Solid-state drives can be so fast

At today's Flash Technology Summit, Western Digital's HGST showcased their latest technological achievements: it claims to be the world's fastest solid-state drive. This prototype product from HGST is based on the PCI-E 2.0 x4 system interface, a full-height, full-length expansion card style, and a 512-byte size in a queued environment that can run a random read speed of 3,000,000 IOPS. The random read latency in a non-queued environment is only 1.5 microseconds, which is two orders of magnitude higher than the best performance under the existing architecture! Unlike existing NAND flash memory, HGST uses a new NVM architecture here, and also integrates a 45nm 1Gb (128MB) PCM phase change storage unit in its self-developed master control. HGST revealed that in order to match the new flash architecture and achieve such a short small block random read latency, they worked with the University of California, San Diego to develop a new communication protocol. The existing NVMe protocol has no problem with NAND flash memory, but it is not enough in front of NVM. HGST did not disclose when it would bring this monster-level solid-state storage product to the market, but it is undoubtedly aimed at large servers and data centers, and ordinary people can just admire it.
