Learn how to develop a video series that will help convert previous viewers into subscribers for your YouTube channel. 1. Research and determine possible topics for your video series The video planning process starts with generating viable video topic ideas. You want to choose topics that will attract the right audience and community to your YouTube channel. I recommend checking your YouTube Analytics to see what your most popular videos are and use that as a seed idea for future videos. To find these metrics, log into YouTube Studio to view your YouTube channel, then click Analytics in the left sidebar. Then scroll down to the chart showing popular videos. From here, you can add relevant metric columns such as “Unique viewers,” “Average views,” and “likes.” Use this data to determine what topics your audience likes on your YouTube channel and come up with related topics where you can create more videos. You can also use Watchtime and View Retention metrics to guide future video topics. To view data for a specific video, visit YouTube Studio and select Videos on the left. Then on the right, select the video you want to view data for. Next, click “Analytics” in the left sidebar to view analytics for that video. On the Overview tab, look at the average viewing duration in the Audience Retention chart. For example, in the figure below, the audience retention rate is 35.3%. This chart shows where viewers are watching different videos or returning to search results. To see the search phrases that brought viewers to your video, click the Coverage tab at the top of the page. Then open the Traffic Sources: YouTube Search report. Examining this data will help you understand what topics your audience is searching for and identify related topics they might find interesting on your channel. This can give you an idea of topics to expand your YouTube channel and outline your video series. If you don’t have a YouTube channel, check out Google Analytics for your blog or website. Make a list of topics related to your most popular pages and posts and use that to make a list of actionable video topics. You can also ask your audience for feedback. Use email surveys or post Instagram story surveys to find out what they’re interested in. By asking for their input, you can include them in your planning process while also learning about the issues they are struggling with. You can provide the solutions they are looking for in your video series. 2. Optimize the video title, description, and search tags After developing a list of potential video topics, the next step is to assess the searchability of those topics. I remind you to perform keyword research to ensure that the topic of your video aligns with what your audience is searching for on YouTube. For example, the phrase “how to edit a YouTube video” turned out to be a poor choice. While the search volume is high, the competition is also fierce. For this search phrase, you'd be better off using one of the narrower related suggestions, such as "how to edit YouTube videos on my phone." Once you’ve identified viable keywords, add them to your video’s title, description, and tags. You need to tell YouTube what your videos are in order to understand where they appear on the platform. Providing detailed information increases the chances that viewers will find your video in search results or in the Suggested Videos sidebar. When you publish your video, include the search phrases you want to rank for in YouTube search results in the Title field. In the description, fill in as many details about your video as possible. You can also add links to related videos, corresponding posts on your blog or website, and even affiliate links in the description. In the Tags box, include the title of your video and any relevant search terms that apply to your video. 3. Create a series of videos related to the topic Start by creating a series of five videos. When planning a series, choose topics that directly relate to each other. This way, when viewers find one of your videos, it’s easy to encourage them to watch other videos in the series. From a tactical standpoint, video series work well on YouTube because you can jump to the “next” and “previous” videos in the series through the video’s YouTube card and links in the video description. 1. Highlight the topic before 60 seconds of the video YouTube pays a lot of attention to its users’ “watch time” and “user retention” metrics, so it’s important to understand these numbers. The most straightforward way to think about watchability is to get to the point as quickly as possible in each video. For example, if you create a how-to video, start showing the steps or process within the first 60 seconds. When people are looking for solutions, they want to find them as quickly as possible, so a brief overview of what you will teach in the video will help provide solutions. 2. Remind viewers to subscribe to your video channel The easiest way to invite your viewers to take action and subscribe to your YouTube channel is to ask them to subscribe! At the end of the video, you can say "If you enjoyed this video and want to hear from me again, please click the "Subscribe" button before you leave. Another strategy is to include a link to your channel in a pinned comment. Whenever you give your audience a call to action like “Subscribe for more videos” and then include a link to your channel, you increase the chances of them following. 3. Move viewers into the sales funnel YouTube channel growth does not necessarily equate to business growth, and an increase in subscriber numbers does not directly translate into more revenue for you. However, since YouTube is a powerful search engine, attracting viewers can help you generate leads.
