Xiaomi Surge S1 processor performance test: Can it beat Snapdragon 625?

Xiaomi Surge S1 processor performance test: Can it beat Snapdragon 625?
On February 18, Xiaomi officially launched the SoC chip independently developed by its subsidiary Pinecone in Beijing. The first chip was named Pengpai S1. The successful launch of the self-developed chip is a milestone event for Xiaomi. Because Xiaomi has since become the fourth mobile phone manufacturer in the world after Samsung, Apple and Huawei to have both terminal and chip R&D and manufacturing capabilities. It is reported that the entire process from the establishment of the Xiaomi Pinecone chip to the mass production of Pengpai S1 took 28 months. I believe that many netizens are looking forward to the performance of this chip. It is worth mentioning that the first Xiaomi 5C equipped with the Pengpai S1 chip has been sent to our editorial department. Now we are looking forward to the game performance test. Parameter specification brief description: Pengpai S1 is a mid-range SoC chip with an energy-efficient eight-core architecture, including 4 A53 large cores with a main frequency of 2.2GHz and 4 A53 small cores with a main frequency of 1.4GHz. In terms of graphics processor, Pengpai S1 uses Mali-T860 MP4. As a mid-range SoC chip, the core architecture and GPU of Pengpai S1 are relatively mainstream. However, when mid-range SoCs such as Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and Kirin 655 have adopted better process technology, Pengpai S1 still uses 28nm process technology, which is indeed missing a big highlight in comparison. Since many netizens want to know which one is stronger between Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and Pengpai S1, and Pengpai S1 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 have similar positioning, we took Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 as the reference object for this performance test. From the hardware specifications, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 also uses an octa-core architecture, but there is no distinction between large and small cores. It uses 8 A53s with a main frequency of 2.0GHz and an Adreno 506 graphics processor. The performance difference between the CPU and GPU of the two is not large, but the 14nm process technology of Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 has a great advantage. In addition, the baseband is also an advantage of Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, supporting all network standards and LTE Cat.7 network standards. However, Pengpai S1 only supports GSM/TD-SCDMA/WCDMA/LTE-TDD/LTE-FDD 5-mode 23-band network (no telecom) and LTE Cat.4 network standard. Benchmark test: As for the specific performance level of the two chips, you can refer to the benchmark results for comparison. It should be noted that when the mobile phone is running, the processor usually tries its best to score. However, in daily use scenarios, the balance between performance and power consumption is more critical, and even performance will be limited. Therefore, the benchmark can only be used as a reference tool for overall performance. In this test, we chose the Redmi 4 equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 as the reference model, and the specific benchmark results are as follows: From the benchmark results, the performance difference between the two is not much, but Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 is better, and the single-core benchmark score is also higher. Game test: In order to have a more comprehensive view of the performance of these two SoCs in actual use, we also conducted game tests. Through the game test, we can not only understand the performance level of Pengpai S1, but also see its scheduling, power consumption and heat generation. It should be noted that the Xiaomi 5C (Surge S1) selects the "Performance Mode" by default in the test. Through the test, we found that it is relatively easy for Xiaomi 5C to play "Honor of Kings". During the whole game, the 8 cores of Surge S1 are in working state, and there is no obvious frequency lock phenomenon. In addition, after 30 minutes of gaming, the heating of Xiaomi 5C is not very obvious. In terms of fluency, the results of software monitoring show that the average frame rate of Xiaomi 5C running "Honor of Kings" for 30 minutes is 29 FPS, and there is no obvious stuttering phenomenon during the whole game process. In addition, the Redmi 4 equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor also has a good performance, with an average frame rate of 29 FPS and low heat. However, by comparison, it is found that the power consumption of Redmi 4 is significantly better than that of Xiaomi 5C, because the power consumption of Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 is better than that of Surge S1. However, when running "NBA 2K16", the experience of Xiaomi 5C is not very ideal, there will be a slight stuttering feeling, and the heat is more obvious than when running "Honor of Kings". The monitoring software shows that the average frame rate of the Xiaomi 5C equipped with Surge S1 in running NBA 2K15 for 15 minutes is only 25 FPS, and the picture is not very smooth. However, the Redmi 4 equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 has a good performance, with an average frame rate of 55 FPS, and the battery score is much higher than that of Xiaomi 5C. Summary: Judging from the test results, the comprehensive performance of Surge S1 has reached a good level, and I believe it can meet the needs of most users. If you usually only play small and medium-sized games such as "Honor of Kings", the performance of Surge S1 is sufficient. But compared with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, Surge S1 is still a little inferior.
