The voice communication system used by British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking for 20 years has been replaced by a new generation of communication platform developed by Intel, which has significantly improved communication efficiency. But Hawking's voice has not changed, and he still uses the same speech synthesizer. Hawking is paralyzed due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The new customized platform is called ACAT (Assistive Context Aware Toolkit), which will be open sourced in January next year, and other researchers can adapt it for use by other disabled people. The old system has been used for 20 years and is in urgent need of an upgrade. The new system has doubled his typing speed and reduced the time required to complete common tasks to one-tenth. ACAT uses technology from Swiftkey, a mobile keystroke application developer.
